Summary

Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) can alter speech sounds, affecting consonant and vowel acoustics. A two-arm Hyrax device resulted in fewer speech changes compared to a four-arm Hyrax during RME treatment.

Background:

  • Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is an orthodontic procedure to widen the palate.
  • Potential effects of RME on speech production are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate phonetic changes caused by rapid maxillary expansion (RME).
  • To compare speech impairments between two-arm and four-arm Hyrax devices.

Main Methods:

  • Acoustic analysis of speech samples from 35 patients undergoing RME.
  • Comparison of two-arm (Group A) versus four-arm Hyrax (Group B) devices.
  • Speech data collected at six time points; maxillary dimensions measured.

Main Results:

  • RME altered acoustic parameters of consonants (/s/, /ʃ/) and vowels (/i/).
  • Group B (four-arm Hyrax) showed greater changes in fricative peak frequency and palatal consonant formants than Group A.
  • No significant change in palatal consonant (/ɲ/, /ʎ/) formant frequencies was observed.

Conclusions:

  • Rapid maxillary expansion induces subtle phonetic alterations.
  • The two-arm Hyrax device appears to cause less speech impairment than the four-arm Hyrax during treatment.
