Summary

Posteriorly located relaxing retinotomy successfully reattached retinas in three patients with proliferative vitreoretinopathy. This surgical technique improved vision in two patients, demonstrating its potential for treating complex retinal detachments.

Background:

  • Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVP) is a major cause of retinal detachment failure after surgery.
  • Retinal reattachment in complex cases remains a significant surgical challenge.

Observation:

  • Three patients with retinal detachments due to PVP were treated with a posteriorly located relaxing retinotomy.
  • This surgical intervention was performed to aid in the process of retinal reattachment.

Findings:

  • All three patients maintained retinal attachment six months after the procedure.
  • Visual acuity improved in two patients, with one progressing from light perception to hand motion, and another from 20/200 to 20/60.
  • One patient experienced a minimal decrease in visual acuity, from 20/20 to 20/25.

Implications:

  • Posteriorly located relaxing retinotomy appears to be an effective surgical option for managing complex retinal detachments with PVP.
  • This technique may offer a viable solution for improving visual outcomes in challenging retinal detachment cases.
  • Further research with larger cohorts is warranted to confirm these findings and establish the long-term efficacy.
