Identifying and helping patients who use marijuana

The physician who suspects that a minor is using marijuana has the responsibility to confirm the diagnosis and to discuss the findings with the patient and parents in a firm, supportive, nonjudgmental manner. Intervention includes ensuring appropriate referral for rehabilitation and providing for follow-up care. Educating the entire family about chemical dependency and monitoring the patient to ensure abstinence from marijuana use are important steps in this process.
