Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. Background:

  • Cutaneous tumors in dogs can present diagnostic challenges.
  • Atypical presentations require thorough histopathological evaluation.

Observation:

  • A 9-year-old mixed-breed dog presented with an atypical cutaneous tumor.
  • Histological examination revealed a well-demarcated tumor with trichoblastic, tricholemmal, and apocrine glandular components.

Findings:

  • Neoplastic cells exhibited multiphenotypic differentiation, expressing markers for hair follicles (cytokeratins 5/6, 14, 15, 19, p63, CD34) and apocrine glands (cytokeratins 7, 18, 19).
  • PAS-positive granules were noted in neoplastic cells of the trichoblastic and tricholemmal areas.
  • Myoepithelial cell proliferation with osteocartilaginous metaplasia was observed in the apocrine glandular area.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of immunohistochemistry in diagnosing complex cutaneous tumors.
  • The findings support the classification of this tumor as a cutaneous mixed tumor, demonstrating differentiation towards adnexal structures.
