    Summary

This study investigated 100 cases of dermatophytosis, confirming fungal elements in over half. Trichophyton mentagrophytes and T. rubrum were the most common fungal species identified.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Mycology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Dermatophytosis is a common superficial fungal infection.
    • Accurate diagnosis and identification of causative agents are crucial for effective treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic yield of KOH preparation and fungal culture in clinically diagnosed dermatophytosis.
    • To identify the most common age groups, affected body regions, and etiological agents of dermatophytosis in the studied population.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective study of 100 patients with clinical diagnosis of dermatophytosis.
    • Direct microscopic examination using Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) preparation.
    • Fungal culture for isolation and identification of dermatophyte species.

    Main Results:

    • Fungal elements were detected in 52% of cases by KOH preparation and 42% by culture.
    • The most affected age group was 21-30 years.
    • Crural region was most common in males; waist involvement was more common in females.
    • Trichophyton mentagrophytes (46.90%) and Trichophyton rubrum (31.9%) were the predominant species.

    Conclusions:

    • KOH preparation and fungal culture are valuable diagnostic tools for dermatophytosis.
    • Understanding the epidemiological characteristics and common causative agents aids in targeted treatment strategies.
