[Personal experience with the treatment of childhood peritonitis of appendiceal origin using peroperative peritoneal
Insights
This study found that a single peroperative peritoneal lavage with antibiotics and Entizol significantly reduces hospitalization and complications for pediatric appendiceal peritonitis. Strict adherence to the procedure is crucial for favorable outcomes in treating this serious condition.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Infectious Diseases
- Abdominal Surgery
Context:
- Peritonitis is a serious complication of appendicitis, particularly in children.
- Traditional treatment involves extensive surgery and longer recovery periods.
- A novel approach using peritoneal lavage with antibiotics and Entizol was investigated.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the efficacy of a single peroperative peritoneal lavage with intraabdominal antibiotics and Entizol for treating appendiceal peritonitis in children.
- To compare hospitalization duration and early postoperative complications with the classical treatment method.
Summary:
- A retrospective study compared 62 children treated with peroperative lavage (1985-1987) against historical data (1962-1981) using classical methods.
- The peroperative lavage group demonstrated markedly more favorable outcomes regarding hospitalization period and incidence of early postoperative complications.
- Successful implementation requires strict adherence to the described therapeutic principles.
Impact:
- This minimally invasive technique offers a potentially superior treatment option for pediatric appendiceal peritonitis.
- Reduced recovery times and complication rates can improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare burdens.
- Highlights the importance of standardized protocols in surgical interventions for improved clinical results.
Abstract:
The author submits his own experience with the treatment of peritonitis of appendiceal origin in children by a single peroperative peritoneal lavage with intraabdominal administration of antibiotics and Entizol. He compares the average period of hospitalization and incidence of early postoperative complications in in 62 children treated in this way in 1985-1987 at the surgical department of the District Institute of National Health in Michalovce with data in the literature and data from their own department in 1962-1981 in children treated by the classical procedure. Both investigated indicators are in patients treated by peroperative lavage markedly more favourable. The basic prerequisite is, however, strict adherence of the fundamental principles of the described therapeutic procedure.
