Summary

In acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), various histiocytes respond differently to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). T-zone and sinus histiocytes persist in lymph nodes during late-stage AIDS.

Background:

  • Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is characterized by progressive immune system deterioration.
  • Lymph node pathology, specifically histiocyte involution, is a key feature of HIV infection progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the differential involution patterns of various histiocyte populations in HIV-infected lymph nodes.
  • To elucidate the role of specific histiocyte types in the pathogenesis of AIDS.

Main Methods:

  • Histological and immunohistochemical analysis of lymph node biopsies from HIV-infected patients.
  • Utilized antibodies (L25, ID1, My4, 12, anti-Leu 3a, KiM4, OKT6, anti-S100, VAK5) to identify and characterize histiocyte populations and HIV antigen.

Main Results:

  • T-zone histiocytes decreased significantly in atrophic lymph nodes.
  • Sinus histiocytes (My4+) remained unchanged in number but enlarged in hyperplastic nodes.
  • Follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) were depleted in atrophic nodes, and HIV antigen was detected exclusively on FDCs.

Conclusions:

  • Different histiocyte populations exhibit distinct responses to HIV infection.
  • T-zone histiocytes and sinus histiocytes demonstrate persistence even in late-stage AIDS, suggesting a role in disease progression or immune response.
