Effect of large weight reductions on measured and estimated kidney function

Large weight loss after gastric bypass surgery can decrease muscle mass and plasma creatinine, leading to an overestimation of kidney function by creatinine-based equations. Cystatin C-based equations remain accurate for estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
