Nearly half of psoriasis patients experience significant fatigue, impacting their quality of life. This fatigue is linked to smoking, pain, and depression, not disease severity.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Psychology
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Fatigue is a common symptom in chronic inflammatory diseases.
  • Psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition, is increasingly recognized as having systemic effects.
  • Limited research has specifically investigated the prevalence and characteristics of fatigue in psoriasis patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and severity of fatigue in patients with chronic plaque psoriasis compared to healthy individuals.
  • To identify clinical and demographic factors associated with fatigue in psoriasis.
  • To assess the impact of fatigue on the quality of life for psoriasis patients.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving 84 patients with chronic plaque psoriasis and 84 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

  • Fatigue assessment using the fatigue Visual Analogue Scale (fVAS), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and Short Form 36 (SF-36) Vitality scale.
  • Disease activity measured by Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI); quality of life by Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI).
  • Main Results:

    • Over 50% of psoriasis patients reported clinically significant fatigue across all three assessment tools, compared to only 2-4% in healthy controls (P < 0.001).
    • Median fVAS, FSS, and SF-36 Vitality scores were significantly worse in psoriasis patients than in controls.
    • Fatigue severity showed a correlation with Dermatology Life Quality Index scores in univariate analysis, but not with Psoriasis Area and Severity Index scores.

    Conclusions:

    • Substantial fatigue affects nearly half of patients with psoriasis.
    • Fatigue in psoriasis is associated with factors such as smoking, pain, and depression.
    • Psoriasis disease severity (PASI) was not found to be a significant predictor of fatigue in this study.
