Summary

Minimally invasive posterior cervical decompression effectively treats cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) in elderly patients. This safe surgical approach significantly improves function and quality of life, even for those with severe deficits.

  • Twelve patients (average age 74.5 years) underwent the procedure with no complications.
  • Significant functional improvements were observed, with five wheelchair-bound patients regaining the ability to walk.
  • Modified Japanese Orthopedic Association scores improved from 8.4 to 13.5, and Nurick scores improved from 3.8 to 2.3.

Conclusions:

  • Minimally invasive microscopic posterior cervical decompression is a safe and effective option for select CSM patients.
  • This technique shows promise for improving outcomes in the elderly population with CSM.
