Insights
Most child mental health research comes from wealthy nations, leaving many children without care. Adapting evidence-based interventions for cultural contexts is crucial to bridge this treatment gap.
Area of Science:
- Child and adolescent mental health
- Global mental health disparities
- Evidence-based intervention adaptation
Background:
- Child and adolescent mental health intervention evidence predominantly originates from high-income countries.
- A significant global treatment gap exists for child and adolescent mental health disorders, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
- The majority of the world's children reside in LMICs, underscoring the need for accessible mental health solutions.
Discussion:
- Cultural and contextual adaptation of interventions is essential for increasing their acceptability and reach in diverse settings.
- Addressing the unique needs of children in LMICs requires tailored approaches to mental healthcare.
- Systematic adaptation strategies can overcome barriers to implementing evidence-based practices globally.
Key Insights:
- High-income country research does not fully address the mental health needs of the global child population.
- Adaptation of interventions is key to reducing the mental health treatment gap in LMICs.
- Culturally sensitive interventions enhance treatment accessibility and effectiveness for diverse youth populations.
Outlook:
- Future research should focus on culturally adapting and validating interventions for LMICs.
- Increased global collaboration is needed to disseminate effective child mental health strategies.
- Policy initiatives supporting intervention adaptation can improve mental health outcomes for children worldwide.
Abstract:
The majority of evidence for child and adolescent mental health interventions is generated in high-income countries. However, the majority of the world's children live in low- and middle-income countries, resulting in a large treatment gap for these disorders. A systematic approach to adapt evidence-based interventions so as to address cultural and contextual issues will increase an interventions acceptability and reach, allowing us to address these enormous unmet needs.
