Development of Antibiotic Resistance01:30

Development of Antibiotic Resistance

1.7K
Antibiotic resistance is a major public health concern that arises when bacteria evolve mechanisms to withstand the effects of antibiotic treatments. This resistance can be intrinsic, acquired through genetic mutations, or transferred between bacteria via horizontal gene transfer. The development of antibiotic resistance poses significant challenges in treating bacterial infections and necessitates ongoing research to develop new therapeutic strategies.Intrinsic resistance occurs when bacterial...

Defense Against Bacterial Pathogens01:31

Defense Against Bacterial Pathogens

3.2K
The human immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to defend the body against bacterial infections. It consists of various immune cells, each playing a specific role in the defense mechanism.
Phagocytes
Phagocytes are the frontline soldiers of the immune system. They include neutrophils and macrophages. Neutrophils are the most abundant type of white blood cell and are quickly mobilized to the site of infection. Macrophages are larger cells that patrol...

Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

3.8K
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Antimicrobial Effectiveness01:28

Antimicrobial Effectiveness

1.6K
The effectiveness of antimicrobial agents depends on various factors influencing their ability to eliminate microbial populations. Larger microbial populations require more time for complete eradication, emphasizing the importance of population size analysis when evaluating antimicrobial efficacy.Microbial resistance to antimicrobial agents varies significantly. Highly resilient microorganisms include endospores, gram-negative bacteria, and non-enveloped viruses, while prions are exceptionally...

Acute Pyelonephritis II: Diagnostic Studies and Management

568
Introduction:For diagnosing acute pyelonephritis, a comprehensive patient history is collected to identify symptoms such as dysuria, frequent or urgent urination, flank pain, or costovertebral angle (CVA) tenderness that may suggest a kidney infection.Physical ExaminationDuring the physical examination, CVA tenderness is assessed. This involves gentle percussion over the costovertebral angle, where tenderness often indicates a kidney infection.Diagnostic TestsUrinalysis: Used to identify white...

Summary

Drug-resistant gonorrhea is a growing global threat. New treatment strategies are urgently needed as Neisseria gonorrhoeae (the bacteria causing gonorrhea) develops resistance to current antibiotics.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Gonorrhea is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection, ranking as the second most reported notifiable disease in the U.S. and increasing in Europe.
  • The emergence of multidrug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae poses a significant public health challenge worldwide.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current status of drug resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
  • To evaluate the future treatment prospects for gonorrhea in light of antimicrobial resistance.

Main Methods:

  • An extensive literature search was performed to gather recent research on gonorrhea drug resistance and treatment guidelines.
  • Analysis of data from established surveillance programs in the EU, U.S., and U.K. on gonococcal resistance patterns.

Main Results:

  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae has demonstrated resistance to all currently available antimicrobial agents.
  • Increasing resistance to ceftriaxone, cefixime, and azithromycin is threatening established gonorrhea treatment protocols globally.

Conclusions:

  • The rise of resistant gonorrhea strains necessitates the development of novel therapeutic agents and treatment strategies.
  • Continued surveillance and research are critical to combatting this 'superbug' and preserving effective gonorrhea treatment options.
