Summary

Kinesio taping (KT) may enhance speech therapy outcomes for voice disorders. While not a replacement for therapy, KT showed promising results in improving patient-reported voice handicap, warranting further investigation.

Background:

Kinesio taping (KT) is an elastic bandaging technique with demonstrated biomechanical effects.
Dysphonia, a voice disorder, often requires comprehensive treatment strategies.
The integration of complementary therapies in voice rehabilitation is an area of ongoing research.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of Kinesio taping (KT) as an adjunct to traditional speech therapy for patients with dysphonia.
To assess the impact of KT on objective voice parameters and subjective voice-related quality of life.

Main Methods:

A randomized controlled trial was conducted with two groups of dysphonic patients.
The intervention group (DG1) received speech therapy combined with KT.
The control group (DG2) received traditional speech therapy alone.

Main Results:

Both groups showed significant improvements in jitter and noise-to-harmonic ratio.
The KT group (DG1) demonstrated statistically significant improvements in total, emotional, and physical aspects of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI).
The control group (DG2) showed significant improvement only in the total VHI score, with some patients experiencing worsening.

Conclusions:

Speech therapy is beneficial for treating dysphonia, as confirmed by this study.
Kinesio taping, when used adjunctively with speech therapy, showed encouraging preliminary results in improving patient-reported voice handicap.
Further large-scale studies are necessary to elucidate the definitive role and quantify the effect of KT in dysphonia treatment, differentiating it from placebo effects.
