Background:

Standard treatments exist for localized prostate cancer.
Multidisciplinary consultation is a quality objective for patient decision-making in Ontario.
A prostate cancer community partnership consensus (PCPC) panel was formed to enhance collaboration and patient information.

Framework:

The PCPC panel involved 40 prostate cancer specialists from six centers.
Five iterative meetings defined partnership goals, topics, and questions.
Formal consensus required >= 75% agreement via secret ballots.

Implementation:

Forty-one questions addressing 30 issues were identified from literature and expert experience.
Issues were cross-tabbed against five management options: active surveillance, radical prostatectomy, brachytherapy (low and high dose rate), and external beam radiation.
Eighty-six issues were subjected to formal consensus, achieving agreement after three rounds of voting.

Implications:

A consensus-based partnership between urology and radiation oncology is feasible.
The partnership successfully developed a patient information guide.
This guide has the potential to improve shared decision-making for newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients.
