Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore current communication practices and needs related to PrCA prevention and screening between PCPs and AA men.
  • To compare PCP and AA community perspectives on PrCA screening discussions.

  • An online survey was administered to 46 PCPs.
  • Educational sessions with pre/post surveys were conducted with 56 AA men.
  • A forum involving 5 panelists and 38 AA men facilitated open dialogue on PrCA communication.

  • PCPs reported varied perceptions and guideline use for PrCA screening.
  • A significant discrepancy exists between PCPs' reports of discussing PrCA screening and AA men's reported experiences.
  • PCPs were more likely to report neutrality regarding PSA testing (38.0%) than AA men reported their doctors were (10.7%).
  • Educational sessions significantly increased AA men's prostate health knowledge (p < 0.001).
  • AA community members expressed high satisfaction with the educational sessions and forum.

Conclusions:

  • Discrepancies in PrCA screening recommendations from PCPs may impede AA men's screening decisions.
  • The study highlights a need for improved patient-provider communication strategies for PrCA screening in AA men.
  • The implemented forum model shows promise for enhancing communication and engagement in PrCA dialogue.
