Hepatic and Plasma Endothelin-1 in Dogs with Chronic Hepatitis

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels are elevated in dogs with chronic hepatitis (CH), suggesting a role in portal hypertension. This study found higher hepatic and plasma ET-1 in CH dogs, correlating with portal vein pressure.

- A weak but significant positive correlation was found between plasma ET-1 level and SPP in dogs with CH (P = .036, rs = 0.53).
Conclusions:
- Elevated ET-1 in dogs with CH suggests its involvement in the pathogenesis of the condition.
- ET-1 may play a significant role in the development of portal hypertension secondary to chronic hepatitis in dogs.
