Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Immunology
  • Retinal Diseases

Background:

  • Autoimmune retinopathy (AIR) is a rare autoimmune disorder affecting the retina.
  • Nonparaneoplastic AIR, not associated with cancer, presents diagnostic challenges.
  • Limited case reports exist, particularly from India, highlighting the need for awareness.

Observation:

  • A middle-aged female presented with subacute bilateral vision loss.
  • Ophthalmic examination revealed a near-normal fundus appearance.
  • Clinical presentation suggested a nonparaneoplastic autoimmune retinopathy.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis of nonparaneoplastic autoimmune retinopathy was presumed based on clinical findings and investigations.
  • The case highlights the occurrence of AIR in the Indian population.

  • Suggestive investigations supported the autoimmune etiology.
  • Implications:

    • This case underscores the importance of considering AIR in patients with unexplained vision loss.
    • Early detection and prompt management with corticosteroids or immunosuppressive agents may preserve vision.
    • Further research is warranted to understand AIR's prevalence and optimal treatment strategies in diverse populations.
