Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Coblation is a newer tonsillectomy technique.
  • Its benefits and risks compared to other methods are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an updated assessment of coblation tonsillectomy.
  • To compare coblation tonsillectomy with alternative tonsillectomy techniques.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review and descriptive analysis of published literature.
  • Searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Database for randomized control trials.
  • Included 16 studies with 567 patients comparing coblation tonsillectomy to other techniques.

Main Results:

  • A trend towards less postoperative pain was observed in the coblation group across seven studies.
  • More recent studies indicated favorable outcomes for pain and operating time with coblation.
  • Coblation appears comparable to other tonsillectomy techniques, but definitive benefits are not strongly supported.

Conclusions:

  • Coblation tonsillectomy is comparable to existing methods.
  • Further high-quality randomized controlled trials are recommended.
  • Future research should focus on comparing coblation to cold dissection and minimizing electrocautery use.
