Summary

Mouse adenovirus (MAd) strains FL and K87 genomes show significant differences using restriction endonuclease analysis. These findings indicate that MAd-FL and MAd-K87 are distinct species of mouse adenovirus.

Area of Science:

  • Virology
  • Genomics

Background:

  • Mouse adenoviruses (MAd) are significant pathogens in laboratory mice.
  • Understanding the genetic diversity of MAd strains is crucial for disease control and research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To genetically compare two prototype mouse adenovirus strains, MAd-FL and MAd-K87.
  • To determine if these strains represent distinct species based on genomic differences.

Main Methods:

  • Restriction endonuclease analysis was employed to examine the genomes of MAd-FL and MAd-K87.
  • Specific enzymes including Kpn I, PaeR7, Pvu I, Sal I, and Sma I were used to generate restriction profiles.

Main Results:

  • Significant variations were observed in the restriction profiles between MAd-FL and MAd-K87.
  • The analyzed restriction sites revealed substantial genomic divergence between the two strains.

Conclusions:

  • The genomic disparities strongly suggest that MAd-FL and MAd-K87 are separate species of mouse adenovirus.
  • This classification has implications for future research and management of mouse adenovirus infections.
