Acute bioprosthetic mitral valve dysfunction is rare. This report details two cases of sudden failure in newly implanted Perimount Theon valves, diagnosed intraoperatively using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Bioprosthetic valve degeneration is typically a gradual process.
  • Immediate post-implantation failure of bioprosthetic valves is exceptionally uncommon.
  • Potential causes include leaflet obstruction by subvalvular tissue or suture loop entrapment.
