Myocardial infarction patients are at risk for acute stress disorder (ASD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Illness perceptions, including consequences, identity, concern, and emotion, predict the development of ASD and PTSD after MI.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Myocardial infarction (MI) is a critical event with high recurrence risk and potential for chronic complications.
  • MI survivors face increased risk for developing acute stress disorder (ASD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or both.
  • Understanding the psychological impact of MI is crucial for patient recovery and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between patients' illness perceptions and the subsequent development of ASD, PTSD, or both following MI.
  • To identify specific illness perception factors that may predict psychological distress after myocardial infarction.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 76 patients diagnosed with acute MI.
  • Patients were assessed within the first week and at six months post-MI.
Keywords:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Utilized validated scales including CAPS, HDRS, HARS, BIPQ, and semi-structured interviews for comprehensive evaluation.
  • Main Results:

    • ASD incidence was 9.2% and PTSD incidence was 11.9% among MI patients.
    • Illness perception factors 'consequences,' 'identity,' and 'concern' were significant predictors for developing both ASD and PTSD.
    • 'Emotion' as an illness perception factor predicted PTSD development exclusively.

    Conclusions:

    • Illness perceptions significantly predict the induction of ASD and PTSD in patients following acute MI.
    • Targeting specific illness perception factors may offer avenues for early intervention and prevention of psychological disorders post-MI.
