This study applied the Regional Integrated Assessment Tool (RIAT+) to Porto, Portugal, to identify cost-effective air quality policies. The optimal measures reduced both PM10 and NO2 concentrations, aiding informed decision-making for public health.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Science
- Urban Planning
- Public Health
Background:
- Air quality policy planning relies heavily on modeling tools across Europe.
- The Regional Integrated Assessment Tool (RIAT+) is designed for optimizing emission reduction strategies to improve air quality cost-effectively.
Purpose of the Study:
- To apply the RIAT+ to the Porto Urban Area, Portugal, for air quality policy decision support.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of technological and local measures for reducing nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM10).
Main Methods:
- Utilized the RIAT+ for an optimization process incorporating both technological and local emission reduction measures.
- Employed a multi-objective approach prioritizing both NO2 and PM10 control with equal importance.
Main Results:
- The optimal set of air quality measures achieved simultaneous reductions in annual average concentrations of PM10 by 1.7 μg/m³ and NO2 by 1.0 μg/m³.
- Demonstrated the tool's capability to integrate diverse policy measures for air quality improvement.
Conclusions:
- The RIAT+ can effectively support decision-makers in prioritizing air quality objectives.
- Informed decisions regarding pollution reduction and public health enhancement are facilitated by such modeling tools.
