Association Between Adiponectin and Insulin Resistance in Diabetic Urolithiasis

Serum adiponectin levels are elevated in patients with diabetes mellitus and kidney stones. This finding may help understand the link between diabetes, adiponectin, and urolithiasis risk.

- Study included 60 patients with diabetes mellitus, divided into two groups: 30 with urolithiasis (Group A) and 30 without (Group B).
- Measured serum adiponectin, insulin, glucose, urea, creatinine, and 24-hour urinary calcium and phosphate levels.

- Serum adiponectin levels were significantly higher in diabetic patients with urolithiasis (Group A) versus controls (Group B).
- 24-hour urinary calcium and phosphate levels were also significantly increased in Group A.
- No significant difference in serum insulin or insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was observed between groups. A negative correlation between serum adiponectin and insulin was noted in Group A.
Conclusions:
- Serum adiponectin levels are elevated in patients with diabetes mellitus and co-existing urolithiasis.
- Increased urinary calcium and phosphate may contribute to stone formation in this population.
