Association between depression and asthma in Korean adults
This study found a significant association between asthma and depression in Korean adults. Individuals with asthma and depression were more likely to be single and have lower education levels.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Psychiatry
Background:
- Asthma is a prevalent allergic disease with depression as a significant comorbidity.
- Limited data exists on the prevalence of depression among Korean adults with asthma.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the association between asthma and depression in Korean adults.
- To investigate demographic and socioeconomic factors linked to asthma and depression in this population.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from 47,351 Korean adults (>19 years) from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2014).
- Asthma and depression diagnoses were based on self-reported physician diagnoses from Health Interview Surveys.
Main Results:
- Prevalence rates were 2.8% for asthma and 4.1% for depression.
- Logistic regression identified single marital status, unemployment, lower education levels, and obesity as significantly associated with adult asthma.
- Depression was also significantly associated with adult asthma (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.796).
Conclusions:
- Depression is significantly associated with asthma in the Korean adult population.
- Adults with both asthma and depression tend to be single (separated/divorced) and have lower educational attainment.
