Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify physiological variables that predict performance in The Cape Epic.
  • To determine which physiological metrics are most strongly correlated with total race time.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-four amateur riders participated in VO2max testing.
  • Blood lactate measurements were used to determine power output at fixed lactate concentrations (LT2 and OBLA).
  • Total race time served as the dependent variable for correlation analysis.

Main Results:

  • Absolute power output at lactate threshold 2 (POLT2) showed the strongest negative correlation with total race time (r=-0.80).
  • Absolute physiological variables generally correlated better with race time than relative values.
  • VO2max and maximal blood lactate levels demonstrated negligible correlations with total race time.

Conclusions:

  • A well-developed aerobic system is critical for success in multi-day MTB stage races.
  • Focusing on high sustainable sub-maximal power output is key to achieving faster race times.
  • Absolute power output at LT2 is a significant predictor of performance in ultra-endurance MTB events.
