    Summary

Commercially available adhesives for zirconia demonstrated superior shear bond strength compared to experimental formulations. The concentration of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) in experimental adhesives showed a nonlinear correlation with bond strength.

    Area of Science:

    • Dental Materials Science
    • Biomaterials Engineering
    • Adhesive Dentistry

    Background:

    • Zirconia restorations are widely used due to their mechanical properties and aesthetics.
    • Achieving durable bonds between resin cements and zirconia is crucial for clinical success.
    • The role of functional monomers like 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) in adhesive formulations is critical for bonding to zirconia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of varying 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) concentrations on the shear bond strength of resin cement to zirconia.
    • To compare the performance of experimental adhesives with different 10-MDP levels against commercially available zirconia bonding agents.

    Main Methods:

    • Six experimental adhesives with 0-15wt% 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) were synthesized.
    • Commercially available adhesives (Single Bond Universal, Single Bond 2, Signum Zirconia Bond) were included for comparison.
    • Shear bond strength was tested after bonding resin cement cylinders to zirconia substrates using the evaluated adhesives.

    Main Results:

    • Significant differences in shear bond strength were observed among the tested adhesives (p<0.00001).
    • Signum Zirconia Bond and Single Bond Universal exhibited the highest shear bond strength values.
    • A nonlinear correlation (r=0.872) was identified between the percentage of 10-MDP in experimental adhesives and shear bond strength.

    Conclusions:

    • Commercially available adhesives specifically designed for zirconia bonding yielded superior bond strength.
    • The tested experimental adhesives did not show significant differences among themselves, despite varying 10-MDP concentrations.
    • Adhesive failures were the predominant mode of failure across all experimental groups.
