Area of Science:

  • Forensic Medicine
  • Bioengineering
  • Virology

Background:

  • Identifying viral infections pre-autopsy in forensic medicine is challenging.
  • Current methods may lack specificity or require extensive resources.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the genome profiling (GP) method for identifying distinct viral species.
  • To assess GP's utility in forensic and diagnostic virology.

Main Methods:

  • Compared conventional genome sequencing with random PCR-based GP.
  • Utilized JC and BK viruses (two species in the same family) for analysis.
  • Employed cluster analysis for GP results and phylogenetic analysis for sequencing.

Main Results:

  • Successfully distinguished between JC and BK viral species using GP.
  • Detected JC virus from a clinical sample, demonstrating practical applicability.
  • GP method showed comparable results to conventional sequencing in species identification.

Conclusions:

  • Genome profiling (GP) offers a potential simple, economical, and reagent-free approach for viral species detection.
  • GP method shows promise as a future tool in forensic medicine and diagnostics.
  • Further trials are needed, but GP could simplify viral identification processes.
