Background:

  • Intravaginal practices (IVP) are common among women with HIV and increase the risk of bacterial vaginosis (BV).
  • BV is a common genital infection linked to the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV.
  • This study focused on HIV-infected women in Zambia, a region with a high burden of these conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test a pilot intervention aimed at reducing IVP and BV in HIV-infected women.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a culturally tailored, group-based intervention compared to standard care.
  • To assess the impact of the intervention on sexual risk factors and BV prevalence.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 128 HIV-infected women engaging in IVP.
  • Participants were assigned to either enhanced standard of care or an experimental group receiving additional culturally tailored intervention.
  • Data on IVP, sexual risk factors, and BV (using Nugent criteria) were collected at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months.

Main Results:

  • While BV prevalence decreased significantly over time in both arms, the experimental intervention showed a greater impact on reducing IVP.
  • Future interventions should be integrated into routine care and target communities with high rates of IVP, BV, and HIV.
