Area of Science:

  • Regenerative Medicine
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Tissue Engineering

Background:

  • Liposuctioned fat contains autologous collagen forming a cross-linked helical matrix (Types II, III, IV).
  • This matrix includes viable adipocytes and fibroblasts, suggesting potential for tissue regeneration.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the biological performance of a processed fat-derived collagen matrix after implantation.
  • To compare its efficacy and biocompatibility against a common soft tissue filler, Juvederm.

Main Methods:

  • Autologous fat was processed into a connective tissue matrix and cryo-frozen.
  • The matrix was implanted in nude mice and followed for one year, with Juvederm as a control.
  • Histological analysis was performed at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months.

Main Results:

  • No adverse effects or significant bio-reactivity (rating 0) were observed for either the fat matrix or Juvederm.
  • The implanted fat-derived collagen matrix showed favorable comparison to Juvederm throughout the study period.
  • Histology indicated the implanted matrix was replaced by host-derived new collagen and adipose tissue.

Conclusions:

  • Processed and cryo-frozen liposuctioned fat yields a collagen matrix with viable cells for autologous use.
  • This biomaterial demonstrates sustained presence for at least one year post-implantation.
  • The matrix undergoes gradual remodeling, being replaced by endogenous collagen and fat, indicating successful integration.
