Area of Science:

  • Medical Physics
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Radiotherapy Quality Assurance

Background:

  • Accurate patient-specific quality assurance (QA) is crucial for safe and effective intensity-modulated arc therapy (IMAT).
  • Traditional QA methods using ion chambers can be time-consuming.
  • Detector arrays offer potential for more efficient QA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical utility of the ArcCHECK detector array for patient-specific QA in IMAT.
  • To compare ArcCHECK measurements against standard ion chamber measurements and treatment planning system (TPS) calculations.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve patient IMAT plans were analyzed.
  • IMAT plans were calculated on the Eclipse planning system and delivered to an ArcCHECK phantom containing an ion chamber.
  • Point doses and dose/fluence maps were measured simultaneously.
  • ArcCHECK diode array measurements were compared with TPS calculations.

Main Results:

  • Ion chamber measurements showed excellent agreement with TPS calculations (mean difference 0.50%, CCC 0.9996).
  • ArcCHECK measurements on the central axis also demonstrated strong agreement with TPS (CCC 0.9978, mean difference 2.11%).
  • Gamma analysis of dose/fluence maps yielded a mean passing rate of 98.53% (3% dose/3mm criteria).

Conclusions:

  • IMAT patient-specific QA using both ion chamber and ArcCHECK is consistent with TPS calculations.
  • The ArcCHECK detector array provides statistically significant agreement with TPS-calculated doses.
  • ArcCHECK is suitable for routine IMAT patient-specific QA in clinical practice.
