Computed Tomography

9.2K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Cardiac computed tomography (CT) scanning is an advanced cardiac imaging technique that utilizes CT technology, with or without intravenous (IV) contrast, to produce accurate cross-sectional virtual slices of specific areas of the heart, coronary circulation, and major blood vessels such as the aorta, pulmonary veins, and arteries. The computer processes these slices to generate three-dimensional images. Multidetector CT (MDCT) is a rapid form of CT scanning that captures multiple slices...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging Physics
  • Detector Technology
  • Radiological Sciences

Background:

  • Digital imaging plays a crucial role in modern mammography.
  • Advancements in detector technology are essential for improving diagnostic accuracy.
  • Dedicated SPECT-CT systems require high-performance imaging components.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the performance characteristics of a novel digital imager.
  • Assess its suitability for 3D mammotomographic imaging within a SPECT-CT system.
  • Determine the imager's intrinsic properties for advanced breast imaging.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a new flat panel digital imager with 127μm pixels and a 40x30cm active area.
  • Utilized a micro-columnar CsI scintillator for high X-ray absorption (>90% at 60-80kVp).
  • Incorporated narrow 8mm bezels and 14-bit analog-to-digital converters with gain switching for extended dynamic range.

Main Results:

  • Achieved a Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of ~7.5% at the 3.9 lp/mm Nyquist frequency.
  • Measured Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE(0)) of ~75% at RQA5 in the 0.1-1mR dose range.
  • Demonstrated excellent linearity and high contrast image acquisition capabilities.

Conclusions:

  • The new 4030 flat panel imager is a high-resolution, state-of-the-art detector.
  • It is well-suited for breast imaging and other applications.
  • This detector is integrated into a developing SPECT-CT device.
