Alexithymia, difficulty recognizing emotions, is linked to poorer psoriasis self-management and worse illness perception. This study found alexithymic psoriasis patients had lower self-management scores, but treatment did not change these outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Psychodermatology
- Patient Self-Management
- Chronic Disease Management
Background:
- Alexithymia, characterized by difficulty identifying and describing emotions, is associated with various health conditions.
- Previous research suggests a link between alexithymia and psoriasis, but its impact on psoriasis self-management remains unexplored.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of alexithymia in psoriasis patients.
- To investigate the relationship between alexithymia, self-management behaviors, and illness perception in psoriasis patients.
- To assess changes in self-management and illness perception following climate heliotherapy (CHT).
Main Methods:
- 163 psoriasis patients undergoing 3-week CHT were evaluated at baseline and post-treatment.
- Alexithymia was assessed using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20).
- Self-management (heiQ) and illness perception (BIPQ) were measured using validated questionnaires.
Main Results:
- 14.1% of patients met criteria for alexithymia, with an additional 22.1% in the intermediate range.
- Alexithymic patients demonstrated significantly lower self-management scores across all domains.
- Alexithymic patients reported poorer illness perception compared to non-alexithymic individuals.
- No significant changes in self-management or illness perception were observed post-CHT between groups.
Conclusions:
- Alexithymia is prevalent in psoriasis patients and is associated with inferior self-management capabilities.
- The findings reinforce the connection between alexithymia and altered illness perception in the context of psoriasis.
- Further research is needed to understand and address the impact of alexithymia on psoriasis management and patient outcomes.
