Retirement increases sleep duration by an average of 22 minutes during the transition. This change was most pronounced in individuals who previously experienced short sleep, heavy drinking, or sleep difficulties.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Sleep Science
- Public Health
Background:
- Work-life transitions, such as retirement, can impact health behaviors.
- Sleep duration is a critical health indicator, yet its changes during retirement are not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate sleep duration changes from full-time employment to statutory retirement.
- To identify pre-retirement factors predicting these sleep duration changes.
Main Methods:
- Longitudinal analysis of the Finnish Public Sector study data (n=5785).
- Repeated sleep duration surveys linked to retirement records (2000-2011).
- Linear regression with generalized estimating equations to analyze sleep changes.
Main Results:
- A slight decrease in sleep duration was observed immediately before retirement.
- During the 4-year retirement transition, mean sleep duration increased by 22 minutes (from 7h0m to 7h22m).
- Increased sleep duration was most significant for short sleepers, heavy drinkers, and those with sleep difficulties.
Conclusions:
- Transitioning from full-time work to statutory retirement is associated with increased sleep duration.
- Retirement offers a window for improved sleep, particularly for vulnerable groups.
