Self-Help Support Groups

415
Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems.

Cognitive Therapy

1.4K
Cognitive therapy, pioneered by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is a structured approach to addressing psychological distress by focusing on the influence of thoughts on emotions and behaviors. Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Access to evidence-based posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment is limited by numerous barriers.
  • Internet-based guided self-help offers a potential solution to broaden access to effective PTSD interventions.
  • This approach has been underexplored for PTSD treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of internet-based guided self-help for treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • To compare internet-based guided self-help with a delayed treatment control group.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-two adults with mild to moderate PTSD were randomized to internet-based self-help with therapist assistance or a delayed treatment control.
  • The internet-based program comprised eight modules covering psychoeducation, exposure, and cognitive therapy.
  • Clinician-rated PTSD symptoms (CAPS-5) were the primary outcome measure; secondary outcomes included self-reported symptoms, depression, anxiety, and functional impairment.

Main Results:

  • The internet-based group showed significantly lower clinician-assessed PTSD symptoms post-treatment (Cohen's d = 1.86) and at 1-month follow-up.
  • Reductions in depression, anxiety, and functional impairment were also observed in the internet-based group.
  • Average therapist contact time was 2.5 hours.

Conclusions:

  • Internet-based trauma-focused guided self-help is a promising treatment for PTSD.
  • This method requires substantially less therapist time than traditional face-to-face therapies.
  • It presents a viable option for increasing access to PTSD treatment.
