Background:

Many US medical students participate in global health activities during their studies.
Understanding student experiences in global health is crucial for curriculum development and assessment.
Global Clinical Experiences (GCE) offer diverse learning opportunities.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze medical student reflection papers and understand their perspectives on Global Clinical Experiences (GCE).

Main Methods:

A qualitative case study approach was employed.
27 student reflection papers from Global Clinical Experiences (2008-2010, 2014-2015) were analyzed.
Papers were coded for reflection depth and thematic content.

Main Results:

The most frequent theme was 'System of Care/Range of Care'.
44 different diseases were mentioned across the reflection papers.
A significant portion of reflections demonstrated deep engagement, with 9 papers detailing transformational experiences.

Conclusions:

GCEs provide flexible, personalized learning experiences, encompassing culture, health disparities, and disease exposure.
Further research is needed to design curricula that foster transformational learning in global health settings.
