Elastic resistance bands (ERB) show lower muscle activation than conventional resistance equipment (CRE) in multiple-joint exercises. ERB are feasible for rows and stiff-legged deadlifts, but not squats.

- ERB are not recommended as a substitute for CRE in the squat exercise due to significantly lower muscle activation.
- Exercise modality choice impacts muscle activation differently across various multiple-joint movements.
