Porosity in Cement Paste01:18

Porosity in Cement Paste

502
The porosity of concrete is a measure of the void spaces within its structure. These spaces impact its strength and durability significantly. When water and cement interact, a chemical reaction called hydration creates a semi-solid paste. This paste includes combined water, making up approximately 23% of the cement's dry mass, and gel water, which fills minuscule voids known as gel pores, accounting for about 28% of the cement gel volume.

Hydration of Cement01:24

Hydration of Cement

1.1K
Hydration of cement is a chemical reaction between cement particles and water. This process occurs primarily through two mechanisms: through-solution and topochemical. In the through-solution process, anhydrous compounds dissolve into their constituents, hydrates form in the solution, and then precipitate from the supersaturated solution. The topochemical process involves solid-state reactions at the cement particle surface. The through-solution process dominates the topochemical process at the...

Summary

The Lentulo spiral (LEN) and manual (MAN) techniques for calcium hydroxide paste placement resulted in fewer voids than the EndoActivator (EA) sonic device. All three techniques showed similar apical control in root canal treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Dental Materials Science

Background:

  • Effective intracanal medication placement is crucial for successful root canal treatment.
  • Calcium hydroxide paste is a widely used intracanal medicament.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the quality of calcium hydroxide paste fillings using three distinct techniques.
  • To evaluate void volume and apical fill characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty root canals were filled with calcium hydroxide paste using manual (MAN), Lentulo spiral (LEN), or EndoActivator (EA) sonic activation techniques.
  • Radiographic evaluation assessed void volume and apical canal fill.

Main Results:

  • The LEN and MAN techniques demonstrated significantly less void volume compared to the EA technique (P >0.01).
  • No significant differences in void volume were found between the LEN and MAN techniques.
  • All three techniques yielded comparable results regarding the apical limit of the filling (P >0.05).

Conclusions:

  • The combined technique with sonic activation (EA) did not offer advantages over the Lentulo spiral (LEN) or manual (MAN) techniques for calcium hydroxide paste placement.
  • Manual and Lentulo spiral techniques are effective for achieving good intracanal placement of calcium hydroxide paste.
