Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters

2.6K
The introduction of polyesters has brought major development to the textile industry. The wrinkle-free behavior of polyester blends has eliminated the need for starching and ironing clothes.
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the polymer...

Biosynthesis of Polysaccharides01:26

Biosynthesis of Polysaccharides

776
Polysaccharides such as glycogen and starch are synthesized from nucleoside diphosphate sugars, primarily uridine diphosphate glucose (UDPG) and adenosine diphosphate glucose (ADPG). These activated glucose donors act as key intermediates in carbohydrate metabolism and biosynthesis. UDPG primarily involves glycogen synthesis in animals and many bacteria, while ADPG plays a fundamental role in starch synthesis in plants and certain bacteria.UDPG is formed when glucose-1-phosphate reacts with...

Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Biotechnology
  • Polymer Science

Background:

  • Actinomycetes are prolific producers of bioactive compounds.
  • Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a biodegradable polymer with potential applications.
  • Coastal environments are rich sources of microbial diversity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and screen actinomycetes from coastal sediments for PHB production.
  • To optimize PHB production by a selected Streptomyces isolate.
  • To evaluate the feasibility of using low-cost carbon sources for PHB synthesis.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation and screening of actinomycetes from Semmancheri coastal soil.
  • Identification of promising isolates using 16S rRNA sequencing.
  • Optimization of growth conditions and utilization of natural carbon sources (paddy straw, wheat bran, etc.).
  • Characterization of purified PHB using spectroscopic (NMR, FTIR) and microscopic (SEM, TEM) techniques, along with thermal (TGA) and structural (XRD) analyses.

Main Results:

  • Twenty actinomycetes isolates were obtained, nine of which produced PHB.
  • Streptomyces sp. (Accession No: KF667247) showed significant PHB production (1.79-4.26 g/L).
  • Optimization and use of natural carbon sources reduced production costs.
  • Characterization confirmed the structure, purity, and thermal stability of the produced PHB.

Conclusions:

  • Streptomyces sp. from coastal sediments is a promising source for PHB production.
  • Optimized conditions and cost-effective substrates enhance PHB yield.
  • The produced PHB possesses desirable characteristics for potential industrial exploitation.
