Background:

Volunteer motivation is crucial for understanding engagement and retention.
The Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI) by Clary et al. (1998) is a widely used measure.
A comprehensive review of VFI research is needed to synthesize findings.

Purpose of the Study:

To systematically review studies utilizing Clary et al.'s VFI (1998).
To analyze volunteer motivations across diverse samples and study characteristics.
To assess the reliability and factor structure of the VFI.

Main Methods:

Systematic literature review of 48 studies with 67 independent samples.
Analysis of volunteer motivation data from 20,375 to 21,988 participants.
Examination of VFI scale reliability and factor analysis results.

Main Results:

Values motivation consistently scored highest, while Career and Enhancement motivations scored lowest.
Younger (<40 years) and male-dominated samples reported higher Career and Understanding scores.
Samples with <50% women showed higher Social motivation scores.
VFI scales demonstrated good reliability (coefficients .78–.84).
18 of 26 factor analyses confirmed the original six-factor VFI structure.

Conclusions:

Volunteer motivation is multifaceted, with values playing a primary role.
Demographic factors (age, gender composition) influence specific motivational functions.
The VFI is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring volunteer motivations.
Future research should explore the interplay of demographic variables and VFI scales.
