  • To compare the effectiveness of three distinct physical activity programs on increasing physical activity levels.
  • To assess changes in physical activity and weight loss across supervised and unsupervised interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-two overweight/obese adults were randomized into three groups: steps per day (STEP), unsupervised minutes per week (UNSUP-PA), or supervised minutes per week (SUP-PA).
  • All participants received a calorie-restricted diet and a 12-week physical activity intervention (150 min/week or 10,000 steps/day).

Main Results:

  • All groups significantly increased moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (p < 0.001).
  • No significant differences in physical activity increases were observed between the STEP, UNSUP-PA, and SUP-PA groups (p = 0.94).
  • Weight loss did not significantly differ among the three intervention groups (p = 0.81).

Conclusions:

  • Short-term implementation of supervised and unsupervised physical activity programs effectively increases physical activity.
  • All tested physical activity prescriptions, when combined with a standard behavioral weight loss intervention, yield comparable modest weight loss.
  • The findings suggest flexibility in prescribing physical activity for weight management interventions.
