Interpersonal Psychotherapy01:25

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

469
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Psychodynamic Therapy

726
Psychodynamic therapies emphasize the exploration of unconscious processes and early childhood experiences as fundamental contributors to psychological difficulties. These therapies, deeply rooted in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, aim to uncover and resolve unconscious conflicts, granting individuals insights that promote emotional and behavioral healing. Contemporary psychodynamic approaches have evolved, integrating a broader range of influences and methodologies while still valuing the...

Cognitive Therapy

1.3K
Cognitive therapy, pioneered by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is a structured approach to addressing psychological distress by focusing on the influence of thoughts on emotions and behaviors. All cognitive therapies involve the basic assumption that human beings have control over their feelings, and that how individuals feel about something depends on how they think about it. Unlike psychoanalytic methods that delve into unconscious processes or humanistic approaches emphasizing...

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

605
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry and Mental Health
  • Educational Technology
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Training mental health professionals in evidence-based therapy (EBT) is crucial but faces resource limitations.
  • The development of technology-assisted training programs addresses challenges in time, cost, and teacher availability.
  • This study introduces the first empirically evaluated, comprehensive internet-based training for interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess if the online training protocol enhances clinicians' knowledge of IPT concepts and skills.
  • To evaluate the feasibility of the training program through user satisfaction and utility ratings.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 26 clinicians participated in the training.
  • The program included a web-based tutorial, live remote training via videoconference with role-playing, and a post-training web portal for ongoing support.
  • Participants practiced IPT techniques using a case vignette during the remote session.

Main Results:

  • Clinicians demonstrated significant improvements in IPT knowledge and skills (P<.001) with a large effect size (d=2.53).
  • Users reported the technology was easy to use and the content highly relevant for treating depressed clients.
  • Satisfaction with applied learning (3.9/5) and overall satisfaction (3.5/4) indicated feasibility and utility.

Conclusions:

  • The technology-based training program is effective in enhancing clinicians' IPT knowledge and skills.
  • The program is feasible and well-received by clinicians, supporting its use for EBT training.
  • Further empirical research is warranted to validate these findings.
