Students often skip formative quizzes due to poor feedback, curriculum issues, time limits, and fear of judgment. Addressing these factors can improve engagement with formative assessments in medical education.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Assessment in Medical Training
- Student Engagement
Background:
- Formative quizzes are known to correlate with improved student performance.
- However, medical students often do not participate in these valuable low-stakes assessments.
- Understanding the reasons for non-participation is crucial for optimizing learning.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a model explaining why medical students disengage from formative online quizzes.
- To identify key barriers to participation in non-graded assessments.
- To inform strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of formative assessments.
Main Methods:
- Conducted semistructured interviews with 16 preclinical medical students (8 female, 8 male).
- Transcribed interviews verbatim and applied formal thematic analysis.
- Developed a model based on identified themes of non-participation.
Main Results:
- Four major themes emerged: inadequate feedback, curriculum organization and student mistrust, time constraints, and fear of judgment.
- These themes interact to explain student non-participation in formative quizzes.
- Identified specific barriers influencing engagement with low-stakes assessments.
Conclusions:
- Student non-participation in formative quizzes is multifactorial, influenced by feedback quality, curriculum structure, time pressures, and psychological factors.
- Seven practice points are proposed to enhance the effectiveness of formative assessment quizzes in medical education.
- Improving formative assessment design and implementation is key to boosting student engagement and learning outcomes.
