Area of Science:

  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Child Language Disorders
  • Cognitive Interventions

Background:

  • Word-finding difficulties (WFDs) affect children's language production.
  • Early intervention is crucial for children with language impairments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effectiveness of a word-web intervention for children with WFDs.
  • To assess the impact of targeted meta-cognitive awareness and word-retrieval strategies.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized control trial involving 20 children aged 6-8 years with WFDs.
  • Intervention group (n=11) received six sessions of word-web therapy.
  • A waiting control group (n=9) was used for comparison.

Main Results:

  • The intervention group showed significant gains on treated items (average of four times more than control).
  • Improvements were also noted on personally chosen items.
  • Minimal change was observed on untreated items for both groups.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first randomized control trial demonstrating the efficacy of word-finding therapy in children with language difficulties.
  • The word-web intervention is clinically realistic in its approach, intensity, and duration.
  • The findings support the use of word-web interventions for improving word-finding in children.
