Summary

This study piloted an online interprofessional education curriculum for Internationally Educated Health Professionals (IEHPs) in Canada. Findings show improved understanding of collaborative practice and role clarification, enhancing IEHP integration into the Canadian healthcare system.

Background:

Internationally Educated Health Professionals (IEHPs) are crucial to Canada's healthcare system.
Effective integration of IEHPs requires robust interprofessional education (IPE).
Existing IPE may not adequately address the needs of IEHPs in the Canadian context.

Purpose of the Study:

To pilot test a newly designed online interprofessional education curriculum for IEHPs.
To evaluate the curriculum's effectiveness in enhancing interprofessional competencies.
To assess the appropriateness and impact of the curriculum on IEHPs and educators.

Main Methods:

Online curriculum pilot testing with IEHPs and educators across four Canadian provinces.
Data collection via surveys, interviews, pre-post self-assessments, and reflective questions.
Inclusion of seven healthcare professions: LPNs, RNs, RPNs, pharmacists, physicians, OTs, and PTs.

Main Results:

Significant post-intervention increases in confidence scores for role clarification and patient-centered care (P < 0.01).
Improvements noted in team functioning, collaborative leadership, and communication domains.
High participant agreement on the curriculum's content appropriateness (language, scenarios, cultural aspects).

Conclusions:

The online interprofessional curriculum effectively enhanced IEHPs' understanding of collaborative practice in Canada.
The curriculum serves as a valuable resource for improving collaborative practice among IEHPs.
This IPE initiative supports the integration and retention of IEHPs within the Canadian healthcare workforce.
