Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Gallstone disease frequently causes symptomatic presentations requiring surgical intervention.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the gold standard for gallbladder removal.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and patient outcomes of laparoscopic cholecystectomy for symptomatic gallstone disease.
  • To assess the management of common bile duct stones in conjunction with cholecystectomy.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 100 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy between June 1996 and August 1997.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, clinical presentations, operative details, and postoperative outcomes.
  • Inclusion of patients requiring endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for common bile duct (CBD) stone management.

Main Results:

  • The study included 78 females and 22 males with a mean age of 46.2 years.
  • Common presentations included right upper abdominal pain, acute cholecystitis, and jaundice.
  • Conversion to open surgery was required in 3% of cases; 12 out of 16 patients with suspected CBD stones were successfully treated with ERCP and endoscopic papillotomy.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a well-tolerated procedure for symptomatic gallstones with favorable outcomes.
  • The combined approach of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and ERCP is effective for managing complex gallstone disease involving the CBD.
  • Patients report high satisfaction and rapid return to normal activities post-surgery.
