Redox Titration: Iodimetry and Iodometry01:23

Redox Titration: Iodimetry and Iodometry

6.3K
Iodometry and iodimetry are analytical methods used to determine the concentration of oxidizing or reducing agents using iodine. In iodometric titrations, the oxidizing analyte solution is usually acidified and treated with an excess of iodide ions, which generates an equivalent amount of iodine in equilibrium with triiodide. The released iodine is subsequently titrated directly against a standardized reducing agent. As the dilute iodine color becomes pale yellow, a few drops of freshly...

Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy: Lab

For AAS measurements, samples must be introduced as clear solutions, often requiring extensive preliminary treatment to dissolve materials like soils, animal tissues, and minerals. Common methods for sample preparation include treatment with hot mineral acids, wet ashing, combustion in closed containers, high-temperature ashing, or fusion with reagents.
Solutions containing organic solvents, such as low-molecular-mass alcohols, esters, or ketones, enhance absorbances by increasing...

Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring

3.2K
Holter monitoring is a continuous electrocardiography (ECG) recording that tracks the heart's electrical activity over an extended period, generally 24 to 48 hours. This noninvasive diagnostic tool detects irregular heart rhythms that may not be captured during a standard ECG performed in a clinical setting.DeviceThe Holter monitor is a portable, small device connected to several electrodes on the patient's chest. These electrodes detect the heart's electrical signals and transmit them to the...

Precipitation Titration: Endpoint Detection Methods

6.2K
In argentometric precipitation titrations, endpoints can be detected visually by the Mohr, Volhard, and Fajans methods. In the Mohr method, adding a soluble chromate indicator gives an initial yellow color to the analyte solution. As the titrant is added, the first excess of silver ions forms a red silver chromate precipitate, marking the endpoint. The solution pH should be maintained at about 8 by adding solid CaCO3.
In the Volhard method, a standard excess of AgNO3 is first added to the...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health Nutrition
  • Food Quality Control
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are a significant cause of preventable mental deficiency globally.
  • The Indian government mandates iodized salt consumption to combat IDD.
  • Effective monitoring of iodized salt quality is crucial for public health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the iodine content in iodized salt supplied to the Armed Forces in the Pune-Kirkee complex.
  • To identify variations in iodine levels and ensure compliance with quality standards.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of iodine concentration in multiple samples of iodized salt.
  • Quantitative assessment of iodine levels using established laboratory methods.

Main Results:

  • Iodized salt samples exhibited wide variations in iodine content, ranging from 10.6 ppm to 150.1 ppm.
  • Significant deviations from recommended iodine levels were observed.

Conclusions:

  • There is a critical need for stringent quality assurance and regular monitoring of iodized salt within the Armed Forces.
  • Inconsistent iodine levels pose potential health risks and necessitate improved quality control measures.
