We discovered a new material, Pb6Ni9(TeO6)5, exhibiting unusual magnetic properties. This compound shows a weak ferromagnetic behavior below 25 K and a rare, large spontaneous exchange bias without doping.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Solid State Chemistry
Background:
- Honeycomb magnetic materials are of interest for their unique magnetic properties.
- Exchange bias phenomena are typically observed in multi-layered structures or doped materials.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the magnetic and dielectric properties of the novel compound Pb6Ni9(TeO6)5.
- To explore the potential for spontaneous exchange bias in a single bulk material.
Main Methods:
- Detailed structural, magnetic, and dielectric investigations.
- Magnetic susceptibility measurements.
- Isothermal magnetization measurements at various temperatures and magnetic fields.
Main Results:
- An antiferromagnetic-type transition at 25 K (T_N) with weak-ferromagnetic behavior was observed.
- A large coercive field of 1.32 T at 2 K was recorded.
- Significant spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) of 0.19 T at 2 K was detected, enhancing to 0.24 T after field cooling.
Conclusions:
- Pb6Ni9(TeO6)5 exhibits a rare combination of weak ferromagnetism and large spontaneous exchange bias in a single bulk material.
- The findings suggest potential applications in magnetic devices where exchange bias is beneficial.
- Further research into the mechanism of SEB in this material is warranted.

Colors and Magnetism
When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human...
