Summary

Meniscal allograft transplant (MAT) improves outcomes for patients with meniscal deficiency. This meta-analysis found no significant difference in tear rates, failure rates, or clinical outcomes between soft tissue suture and bone fixation techniques for meniscus root repair.

Background:

  • Meniscal allograft transplant (MAT) is a surgical option for young patients experiencing symptomatic meniscal deficiency.
  • Despite reported good outcomes, the effectiveness of MAT and optimal meniscus root fixation techniques remain subjects of debate.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the overall outcomes of Meniscal Allograft Transplant (MAT).
  • To compare the clinical results associated with different meniscus root fixation techniques.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature review and meta-analysis of studies reporting on MAT outcomes.
  • Random effect models were used to determine tear and failure rates, and standardized mean differences (SMDs) for clinical outcomes and pain levels.
  • Data were stratified by root fixation method: bone fixation versus soft tissue suture fixation.

Main Results:

  • The overall cohort showed significant improvements in Lysholm scores (SMD 1.5) and reduced pain (VAS, SMD 1.8).
  • The overall tear rate was 9% and the failure rate was 12.6%.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence suggests no significant difference in outcomes between soft tissue suture and bone fixation for MAT root fixation.
  • Further prospective studies are recommended to confirm these findings.
