Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of animation deformity (AD) in patients undergoing subpectoral implant-based breast reconstruction.
  • To assess patient attitudes and awareness regarding AD.
  • To identify risk factors associated with AD.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of patients (≥6 months postoperative) with subpectoral implant-based breast reconstruction using acellular dermal matrix.
  • Data collected included patient age, BMI, and implant size.
  • A questionnaire assessed AD prevalence, severity, awareness, and patient interest in alternative procedures.

Main Results:

  • 75.6% of surveyed patients reported animation deformity (AD).
  • Most patients (75.6%) were aware of AD, with 14.6% considering it moderate and 11% severe.
  • No significant differences in age, BMI, implant size, or athleticism were found between patients with and without AD.

Conclusions:

  • Animation deformity (AD) prevalence is higher in subpectoral implant-based breast reconstruction compared to augmentation.
  • The majority of patients desire AD avoidance but are deterred by increased risk, cost, or additional surgical stages.
  • Further research is needed to define patient risk factors for AD and guide personalized breast reconstruction choices.
