Resident burnout is high, and work-life policies (WLPs) may help. Low awareness and perceived negative consequences of using WLPs are significant barriers, especially for burned-out residents.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Psychiatry
- Occupational Health
Background:
- Physician burnout is a growing concern, impacting work-life balance.
- Institutional work-life policies (WLPs) are crucial for supporting residents' needs.
- Understanding the influence of WLPs on resident experiences is vital.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of work-life policies (WLPs) on residents' experiences.
- To identify barriers affecting the utilization of WLPs among residents.
- To explore the relationship between WLPs, burnout, and resident perceptions.
Main Methods:
- A nationwide survey was distributed to psychiatry residents and program directors.
- Data collected via SurveyMonkey included WLP awareness, usage, barriers, and burnout levels.
- Anonymous responses (n=255) were analyzed using SPSS to identify correlations.
Main Results:
- Awareness and utilization of WLPs were low, ranging from 2% to 33%.
- Key barriers included workload shifting to co-residents (48%) and perceived leadership disapproval (16%).
- Burned-out residents reported significantly higher barriers to WLP use.
Conclusions:
- Further research into WLPs is needed to combat resident burnout.
- Low awareness, workload concerns, and negative leadership perceptions hinder WLP use.
- Addressing these barriers can improve WLP effectiveness and resident well-being.
